Permanent Lip Color: What to Expect From Healing and Longevity
Permanent lip color, sometimes called a lip blush or natural lip tint, is one of the most requested services in our Brooklyn studio — and also one of the most misunderstood. Clients arrive expecting the shade they see on day one to be the shade they keep forever. In reality, the color you love lives on the other side of a two-week healing arc. Understanding that arc is the difference between anxiety and confidence.
At Sultan Beauty, we implant color into the lips using a blend of organic reparative dyes and FDI-approved pigments, deposited by hand with a fine needle configuration. The goal is never a lipstick effect. It is a soft, believable wash of color that reads like your lips on their best, most hydrated day.
How permanent lip color heals: day 1 to day 14
Healing is predictable when you know the pattern. Every set of lips is different, but the timeline below is what most of our clients experience.
Days 1–3: bold and swollen
Immediately after your appointment, the color looks dramatically darker and more saturated than your final result — often two to three shades deeper. Mild swelling is normal and settles within 24 to 48 hours. Your lips may feel tight and tender. This is the most intense phase, and it is temporary.
Days 3–7: peeling and lightening
A light flaking or peeling begins as the outer layer of skin renews. You may feel like the color is disappearing entirely. Do not pick or exfoliate — let the flakes shed on their own. Pigment is still settling into the deeper layer beneath.
Days 7–14: the “ghost” and the bloom
Around day seven, many clients hit what we call the ghost stage: the color looks faint, patchy, or almost gone. This is normal and expected. Over the following week, pigment gradually re-emerges as the skin fully closes and settles. By day 14 you begin to see your true, healed tone.
Final color is typically assessed at the six-to-eight-week mark, when we may recommend a complimentary perfecting session to even out tone and depth. You can review this and our other permanent makeup services before you book.
How long does permanent lip color last?
Most clients enjoy their results for two to three years before a refresh is desired. Longevity is not a fixed number — it depends on your skin, your habits, and your care.
- Skin type & metabolism: oilier, faster-renewing skin tends to fade sooner.
- Sun exposure: UV light is the single biggest cause of premature fading. Daily SPF on the lips protects your investment.
- Lifestyle: smoking, frequent exfoliating treatments, and certain medications can accelerate fading.
- Pigment shade: softer, warmer tones fade more gracefully than very deep shades.
A periodic color boost keeps the tint looking fresh without starting over. Individual results may vary.
Aftercare that protects your color
The two weeks after your session decide how vivid and even your final result will be. Our simple aftercare protocol is designed to be easy to follow:
- Blot gently and keep lips clean; apply the balm we provide in a thin layer.
- Avoid spicy, salty, and acidic foods for the first few days; use a straw for drinks.
- No picking, scrubbing, or peeling — let flakes fall naturally.
- Skip the gym, saunas, pools, and direct sun until fully healed.
- Once healed, use lip SPF daily to slow fading.
We walk every client through this in person, and you can always message us with questions during your heal.
Is permanent lip color right for you?
It is an excellent option if you want more definition, a corrected or evened tone, or simply to wake up with soft, healthy-looking color. It is a considered, clinical procedure — not an impulse — and it rewards patience through the healing window. If you are ready to plan your treatment, book a consultation and we will map the right shade, technique, and timeline for you.
Frequently asked questions
Does permanent lip color hurt?
Most clients describe it as very manageable. We use a topical numbing protocol before and during the session to keep you comfortable, and the lips settle quickly afterward. Individual comfort levels vary.
Why does my lip color look like it disappeared after a week?
This is the normal ‘ghost’ stage around day seven. The surface has peeled but the pigment underneath is still settling. Color re-emerges over the following week and stabilizes by about day 14.
How long does permanent lip color last?
Typically two to three years before a refresh is desired. Longevity depends on skin type, sun exposure, and lifestyle. Daily lip SPF is the best way to slow fading. Individual results may vary.
Do I need a touch-up session?
Most clients benefit from a perfecting session six to eight weeks after the first appointment to even out tone and depth. We assess this together once your lips are fully healed.
